The strife is over, the battle is won! Christ our Lord and Redeemer has conquered death through His own death and resurrection. Let us rejoice and be glad! Easter is not just one day or one weekend, it is a whole season. We celebrate Easter for 50 days (Eastertide), from Easter Sunday until the Pentecost!
The Easter season is rich with celebration beginning with Easter Sunday followed by the Easter "Octave" (the 8 days following Easter) which is concluded with Divine Mercy Sunday, celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter. This feast day is not only observed by Catholics, but some Anglo-Catholics of the Church of England also celebrate it. It is based on the Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy that Faustina Kowalska (Saint Faustina) reported as part of her encounter with Jesus. Divine Mercy Sunday is a very special Sunday when the Divine floodgates from heaven are wide-opened and Jesus offers us the total forgiveness of all sins and punishment to any soul, who goes to Confession and receives Him in Holy Communion, on that day.
Eastertide does not end there, however. During the remaining 42 days we continue to prepare for the ascension or our Lord and the celebration of Pentecost. Pentecost comes from the Greek work "pentecoste" which means 50th day and it commemorates the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon Our Lady and the Apostles. Before Jesus ascended into heaven he gave his apostles instructions regarding their mission, that they "were to be his witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all of Judaea, and in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." He promised them that they would receive "power from the Holy Spirit whom he would send to them." (see Acts 1: 6-)
The entire season is filled with readings from the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel recounting the various encounters that Jesus has with Mary Magdalene and his Apostles after his resurrection. Encounters in the Garden, in the upper room, on the road to Emmaus, on the seashore and finally on the Mountain where he sends them forth just before he ascends to the Father in Heaven.
While we are not able to encounter Jesus face to face as his followers did, we can encounter Jesus - His real presence - as often as we'd like in the Sacrifice of the Mass and Holy Communion and in spending time with him in Adoration! Let's make the most of this Easter Season by attending mass for all the special feasts and celebrations, going to confession and receiving holy communion and by spending time with Jesus in Adoration. He's waiting for you - Come let us Adore Him!!
God Bless
